Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology puts prime importance to women's health, assuring female patients the best care in relation to their reproductive system.
It is equipped with up-to-date ultrasound machines and staffed by competent OB-Gyne sonologists providing expertise in evaluation, management, and follow-up of each patient.
It provides patients with accurate diagnostic procedures, supported by advanced diagnostic imaging services that aid doctors in the following:
- Determining vital information about the unborn baby (e.g. ageing and presentation, estimated weight, body and breathing movements, amniotic fluid volume, gender, etc.)
- Detecting abnormalities in the unborn baby
- Confirming pregnancy at a very early stage and ruling out ectopic pregnancy
- Diagnosing gynecologic conditions in both sexually and non-sexually active women
- Detecting pathology and abnormalities in the women's uterus and ovaries
- Performing 3D and 4D scans on the fetus and detecting reproductive anomalies
- Performing transvaginal ultrasound procedures to detect abnormalities in the uterine endometrium and fallopian tubes. These procedures are called Saline Infusion sonohysterogram (SISH) and Hysterosonosalpingography(HSSG).
The Lactation Unit is a hospital initiative unit under the Maternity and Child Nursing Service Line and Breastfeeding Working Group, which caters to all expectant and breastfeeding mothers, newborns, infants, and their families. The unit extends lactation services and support to the institution's associates, in-patients, and previously admitted visiting patients who are happily breastfeeding or having difficulties in breastfeeding. Also, it serves as a lactation station where breastfeeding mothers may be given a private area to breastfeed their babies. The Lactation Unit is stationed at the 8th floor North Wing of the Nursing Tower at St. Luke’s-Global City site while the Maternity Unit is at the 2nd floor of Main Hospital Building in St. Luke’s-Quezon City.
As part of the institution's breastfeeding advocacy, the Breastfeeding Working Group was created to better educate and communicate to the healthcare team, associates, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers the benefits of breastfeeding. The group officially organizes and conducts breastfeeding classes and activities to promote breastfeeding in the hospital. Hence, the Breastfeeding Working Group, composed of medical, nursing and non-medical personnel, is in charge of promoting compliance to breastfeeding policies, as well as the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding and global criteria in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) guidelines set by the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
Maternal and Child Health Care: The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)
St. Luke's Medical Center- Global City has taken a step towards global strategy by practicing and embracing the “Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative” (BFHI) global criteria. BFHI was launched by UNICEF and WHO in 1991-1992 as part of a global strategy of the Infant and Young Child Feeding Program to address the Millennium Developmental Goals on child mortality, maternal and reproductive health, and nutrition. Over the last 15 years, the Initiative has grown, with more than 20,000 hospitals designated in 156 countries. (UNICEF, 2009)
The BFHI program in Global City was initiated in 2011 and the institution subsequently underwent Department of Health Accreditation. On December 2011, the institution received a Certificate of Commitment as a “Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital.” The Breastfeeding Working Group, Lactation Unit and Services continually promote and innovate management and practices to close the gap between the traditional and evidenced based practices of breastfeeding.
