Basic Forensic Science

Every student or practitioner in the elds of medical science, criminology, law and law enforcement needs an understanding of forensic science and its impact on criminal investigation. This one-day seminar aims to introduce some basic concepts of forensic science as well as standards of forensic practice to foster better communication between the forensic scientist and the end user of his work, the lawyer or the criminologist. The DNA test module will provide an overview of the science and technology of DNA testing, the understanding and interpretation of results and the factors aecting or limiting the test when used in paternity testing as well as rape or homicide cases. During the forensic pathology module, the standards for autopsy and autopsy reporting for various scenarios will be discussed, including the interpretation of the injuries and again, any limitations of the autopsy.
